“People often ask me who my most famous client is, I say Koko. They usually say ‘Wow, Coco Chanel’ and I say no, Koko the Gorilla.”-Larry Shepps, CEO
PlantUs has worked on numerous projects over the years, but one of our favorites was working along the head horticulture designer of the Bronx Zoo. Between 1993-2000 PlantUs (then Landscape Management Solutions) was the primary outside contractor associated with the creation of the Congo Habitat, Food Court, Flamingo Habitat, Aquatic Bird House, and Butterfly Garden. With cranes, manpower and planting techniques PlantUs was able to create a habitat with over 400 species of plants and over 15,000 flowers. Some of these plants had never been grown in New York City before, which presented significant challenges to creating the correct soil profile and growing conditions. Not to mention the trees were thorny so the Gorillas wouldn’t scratch them, which made it hard for the PlantUs team to place them and significantly raises bandage costs!
